What is a Nursing Home (Skilled Nursing Facility?)

Skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes, may also be called long-term care facilities or convalescent homes.  They normally provide the highest level of care that requires constant monitoring and the availability of medical personal.  Because of the high level of monitoring that skilled nursing provides, they are typically considered to be very restrictive.

Important points to remember about skilled nursing facilities:

  • Nursing home patients generally rely on assistance with most of all activities of daily living, meals, bathing, dressing and toileting.
  • Provides 24-hour skilled nursing care and medical supervision for the more critically ill patients that are one step below hospital acute care.
  • Very expensive to pay privately.  Medicare or Medicaid may pay for nursing home care under certain circumstances.  Private health insurance policies or long-term care insurance.
  • Very restrictive
